Delivering Industry Improvements
Continuous improvement is a core value for all Gladstone Industry Leadership Group (GILG) members and is the foundation of our Code of Conduct. While the Code commits to future improvements in the environment, infrastructure, workforce and community, GILG members already had a long track record of improvement in these areas. The members’ public signature of the GILG Code in December last year enabled members to formally recommit to this fundamental conviction. The Code also provides a framework to report on the achievements of the Group. GILG has therefore released the first update of our members’ major improvements over the past five to 10 years, dependent on the site. This update is based upon easy to read presentations of the improvements made by BSL, Cement Australia, NRG, QAL and Yarwun, which are available at the GILG website www.gilg.com.au. Of particular relevance to community clean air concerns, GILG members have spent well over $280 million on several dust reduction projects. These projects included major process upgrades, installation of bag houses and fogging sprays and improved coal conveyor and receiving systems. A number of the capital projects undertaken by GILG members have also had significant greenhouse gas emission benefits. A reduction of over 270,000 tonnes per annum of emissions has been achieved as a result of these projects. Importantly in a dry continent such as Australia, GILG members have invested over $11 million to save more than 3.2 gigalitres of drinking water each year. That is equivalent to more than 16,000 Olympic sized swimming pools per annum! GILG members also recycle nearly 50,000 tonnes of waste per year that was previously sent to landfills, committed over $12 million in noise reduction projects and planted over 23,000 trees. Additionally, multiple projects have been completed to preserve native flora and fauna, remediate degraded ash ponds, reduce odour and improve air monitoring. In total, this equates to well over $300 million in continuous improvement projects funded by GILG members over the past five to 10 years. For more information on these projects and their resultant improvements, please go to www.gilg.com.au.
