How has GILG delivered on its Code of Conduct?

The Gladstone Industry Leadership Group (GILG) Code of Conduct sets the benchmark for all GILG members. The public signature to this Code was the centerpiece of GILG’s launch in December 2008.

The Code of Conduct commits GILG members to continuous improvement in the areas of environment, infrastructure, health and safety, community engagement and labour recruitment and retention.

To see how GILG industries are tracking since putting their names to the Code, representatives of BSL, Cement Australia, NRG, QAL and Yarwun have compiled their commitments in easy to read presentations available below.

In summary, this is how GILG members are progressing.

In regards to the environment, resolution of Gladstone’s clean air issues remains GILG’s primary focus. Along with the completion of environmental management audits, improved air emissions monitoring and ongoing greenhouse gas reductions, GILG’s members are committed to a plan that tackles Gladstone’s air quality concerns. This plan will be internally launched in September 2009.

GILG members have also completed numerous projects designed to improve their health, safety and environmental performance. Next week GILG will release a list of our members’ major infrastructure projects and other changes and explain these improvements.

As those of you who’ve visited a GILG site know, health and safety are ingrained into site culture. This is as a result of each member’s implementation of zero incident policies.

As well as this, most GILG members have employee wellness programs which encourage employees and their families to live a healthy lifestyle.

As for community engagement, GILG industries open their doors to the community through free weekly industry tours run by Gladstone Promotion Area and Development Limited (GAPDL). So, if you would like to look inside the gate, give GAPDL a call on (07) 4972 4000.

In addition, GILG members have very active community relations teams who you’re encouraged to contact if you have any concerns or questions. They also have employee committees which allocate over $650,000 in annual community support funding.

Finally, one of the ways in which GILG members fulfil their labour Code commitment is through their support of school based trade training programs and over 170 apprenticeships.

I look forward to hearing from you soon, cheers, Kurt.
